If you live on the Cortina floors and you don’t think you have met Katie Garrity, chances are you have heard her. She has been yelling run-on sentences of elation through the hallways, punctuating them with screams of excitement when she reunites with friends, old and new. She is a bundle of joy (i mean that in the least newborn-baby way possible) that we will get to share an entire year with here on Cortina. I echo her excitement (though I may not always express it the same way) for the start of the year. I am full of expectation, and hearing Katie’s excitement only makes my own grow. Read her thoughts and be reminded of the importance of people and the experiences they bring to the table in community:
This past week I had job training for the Creighton Center for Service and Justice (CCSJ). We started out the week with a retreat in Griswald, Iowa. It was a great way to center ourselves and refocus on why we want to work in the office and talk about our passion for social justice. The rest of the week we did North and South Omaha immersions and learned about different social justice issues, working in the office and advocacy training.
This training was a great way for me to reflect on the beginning of this year and why I am passionate about social justice. I learned so much from the other students and staff I will be working with this year. The CCSJ has a truly incredible staff and I feel so fortunate to have gotten to know the people in the office. It was so inspiring to hear about everyone’s passions and experiences with social justice and serving others. While the topics we talked about were sometimes frustrating, it was great to have this community to reflect with and come back to each day. Since everyone has had such different experiences, talking about how each thing we encountered affected us as individuals enabled us to see the big picture easier and learn from each other’s perspectives.
This training definitely made me more excited for Cortina and all the learning and growing we will be doing as individuals and a community. It was so refreshing to be reminded of the power of community and how much you can learn from the people around you. I’m really looking forward to getting to know everyone and learn from all the incredible experiences my floormates have had. And now that we are two floors, there’s twice as many people to learn from! How awesome! I’m really looking forward to an incredible year with the Cortina program!
